Mértola

Mértola gives its name to the sixth largest municipality in the country and surrounds itself with the tranquility of the Alentejo surroundings, where properties stretch for miles and small villages spring up, maintaining the typical houses of the region.

Alentejo town with an Islamic aura, Mértola has its origins in a pre-Romanesque period, in which several peoples passed through there. Characterized by a unique climate motivated by its geographical configuration that inserts it in the Alentejo plain, but also in the valley of the Guadiana, those who see Mértola from afar think it´s stuck in time.

But there is a lot of life in the village. Mértola´s Archaeological Site stands out, which presents a vast museum program (considering this a village-museum) with different areas of intervention and research, organized into three nuclei: the Roman Nucleus, the Visigothic Nucleus, which includes a Christian basilica, and the Islamic Nucleus, where you can see one of the best Portuguese collections of Islamic art (ceramics, numismatics and jewelry).

On a more festive note, we highlight the Bread, Honey and Cheese Fair (April), the Islamic Festival, which usually takes place in May, the town festivities, which take place around the time of the municipal holiday (June 24) and the S. Mateus Fair, which takes place at the end of September and is a regional landmark. We also highlight some of the landscapes that can be seen in the county, such as the mining port of Pomarão and Penha d´Águia, and one of the most beautiful fluvial beaches in our country, the beach of Tapada Grande, or as it is better known, the beach of Mina de S. Domingos. There are many reasons to fall in love with this region.
