Alcoutim

The municipality of Alcoutim is a border area par excellence, drawing a line that separates the eastern Algarve from the lower Alentejo and serving for centuries as a "bridge" to the neighboring country.

With its headquarters in the historic village of Alcoutim, this municipality, which is divided into 5 parishes (Alcoutim, Giões, Martim Longo, Pereiro and Vaqueiros) is one of the least populated in the Algarve region, with only about 3,000 inhabitants.

However, despite its shy dimensions, Alcoutim offers a varied and rich cultural agenda, as does the history that surrounds this area. From its genesis, the town retains part of the Castle walls and the steep and picturesque streets, and the close relations with San Lúcar do Guadiana, located on the other bank of the Guadiana River, already in Spanish territory.

Alcoutim is the starting point of the Via Algarviana, a 300km long pedestrian route that runs through the interior of the Algarve, between Alcoutim and Cape St. Vincent, as well as having circuits within the county that celebrate its traditions and customs. Finally, you can visit the municipal museum, which is spread throughout the municipality, and the Pego Fundo fluvial beach, an infrastructure that has leisure facilities and is perfectly inserted in nature. There are many reasons to fall in love with this border town and you can get here either by road access or by the Guadiana river.
