Mercado de Verdura – Julho 1922/julho2022 – Centenário do Projeto
26 Jul 2022
This month marked the centennial of the building that now houses the António Aleixo Cultural Center.
Opened in July 1922, this elegant building started out as the Mercado da Verdura (a Greens´ Market). It is a building that escapes from the Pombaline style of the city, being a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture (with touches of 20th century modernism), and that was well accepted by the vila-realense society for its social importance and architectural quality.
In the mid-1960s, it was renamed the 1º de Maio Market and in June 1998, it became the António Aleixo Cultural Center, hosting several exhibitions and serving as a stage for various shows.
To mark the centennial of this architectural landmark of the city, the Municipal Archive has the exhibition "Mercado de Verdura - Julho 1922/july2022 - Centenário do Projeto", which will be on display until October 14.
Be sure to visit the
Cultural Center
, as well as the commemorative exhibition in the
Municipal Archive
