Cultural August in Vila Real de Santo António
02 Aug 2022
August is a month when the county is visited by thousands of people who seek the region on vacation and where the residents themselves are looking for different activities. With that in mind, Vila Real de Santo António City Hall is promoting dozens of cultural activities throughout the municipality, where we find musical, cinematographic, and theater proposals, besides the usual fairs and markets.
All these proposals are free and the first highlight is the "Street Cinema" nights that take place in Avenida da República (Vila Real de Santo António), in Praceta Casablanca (Monte Gordo) and in the old cemetery of Cacela Velha, on various dates, but always at 21:30. You can check the calendar here.
A new addition to this year's program of large-scale cultural events is the cycle "Sons in the Garden", a proposal more geared towards the dance floor, which brings three names of new Portuguese music to the banks of the Guadiana River: Moullinex on August 5th, Sitah Faya x Spock on August 19th, and Fogo Fogo on August 27th.
Classical music will flood the streets of Cacela Velha on August 7, 11, 18 and 19, always at 9:30 pm. These concerts, with a more intimate tone, will take place in the Church of Cacela Velha and in the Hermitage of Santa Rita, under the theme "20th Century". Pedro Ribeiro Rodrigues (guitar) and Isabel Vaz (cello) will take the stage at the Church on August 7th, and Rui Mourinho (guitar) and João Lourenço (flute) on August 11th. And at the Ermida, Teresa Matias (recorder) will perform on August 18 and 19.
Jazz also arrives at the riverside, with "Guadiana Jazz". Framed in a framework set by the light reflected on the watercourse and promoting a relaxed atmosphere perfect for the end of the day, Nebuchadnezzar Group will perform on August 14, João Frade Jazz Trio on August 21, and Papa Dragon on August 28 (always at 7 pm).
The Centro Cultural António Aleixo, whose building has just celebrated its centennial, hosts the theatrical initiative of this program, presenting the play "Seu nome próprio Maria", staged by the "II Acto" company on August 3, 8, 10, at 9:30 pm.
There are also initiatives aimed more at the younger generation, such as the Youth Party on August 12th (which will take place in front of Monte Gordo Casino), environmental workshops on the beaches of Santo António, Monte Gordo, Lota and Manta Rota, and the White Night on August 20th (which will feature names like Duo Reflexo and DJ Cabeça).
And, finally, the usual handicraft fairs and shows that take place in all the parishes of the municipality, the folklore festivals and the popular festivals that honor the patron saints of each area every year.
We remind you that all these initiatives are developed by the City Council in partnership with local associations and groups, and are free of charge.
